Round the World Travel & Cost Summary: Month 1

One month on the road! We’ve been a few places, seen a few things, took thousands of photos and countless hours of video. We also learned a lot about what works for us in this new lifestyle and what does not. One of the biggest lessons of the month is that we are still moving too fast and trying to pack too much in with limited time. So, we’ve applied that to the next stage of our trip and hopefully we won’t spend as much time feeling stressed and exhausted.
It has been a great month though. Besides what you see in this post, we were able to be in Canada in time for the birth of my new niece and got to meet her when she was just 12 hours old which is something I’m really grateful for since I usually miss big family events back home.
This post is a round up of sorts to summarise what we got up to in the last month as well as our highlights and lowlights, top photos & posts, and an indication of how much travelling the world costs.

Accommodation – £50 average per night
We had pretty good luck with our accommodation this month. Most was paid for in advance so that we could get bonus Flying Club miles (I go into the details in this post) which meant that we only had to pay for a couple on the road. The worst hotel we stayed at would be Ocean Palms just because there was a weird vibe to the place and the breakfast was cramped around the lobby desk, it was still decent accommodation though. The best hotel overall would have to be Moonstone Landing – the rooms were great, it was right across from the beach, and the internet was the best we had all month!HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel

After a whirlwind December, the rest of January will be at a slower pace and hopefully gives us a chance to catch up on posts and sleep! We’ll be spending our time between my hometown of Gibsons, and Vancouver before heading to Seattle for our last weekend in North America. Then it’s off to New Zealand on January 25th!Anything we missed? Let us know if there’s anything you’d be interested in us tracking on our round the world trip and we’ll add it to future posts.

Too bad we missed each other in Gibsons. 😉 Maybe we’ll run into each other in Seattle, since I’ll be there for the middle two weekends this month. Wouldn’t that be funny?! Haha.
That would be too funny! We’re there on the 23rd/24th so if you’re around, let me know!
I actually will be there on those dates! Unfortunately I don’t think it will work for me to meet up with you guys, as I won’t have transportation (driving down in my Dad’s vehicle), and we’ve got family stuff all that weekend (big 90th birthday party for my grandma, etc.). Too bad! We’ll just have to meet up another time somewhere else in the world. 🙂
Great stats guys. Andrew and I just watched your flying upperclass video – amazing! We’ve never had such a plush flight before! Sounds like the US was pretty expensive, did you look at using Airbnb at all? I think we saved a lot in New England by using that.
We’ve looked at using Airbnb a few times but it never seems to work for us! We get declined for whatever reason or places we want to stay at haven’t updated their calendars and actually aren’t available or it isn’t much cheaper than a hotel. We’ll keep trying though!
